Trip to Normandy 2009: Saint-Valéry-en-Caux + Etretat

map_france_normandy
Normandy (dark blue on the map of France), consists of two regions: Basse-Normandie, the lower part, comprising the departments of Calvados, Orne and Manche, and Haute-Normandie, the upper part, comprising Eure and Seine-Maritime.

Note: pictures that don't have my name on it, are made by others. I collected them on the internet, so I'm sorry if I can't give credits..

Part 2: Saint-Valéry-en-Caux + Etretat

normandy_mapfécampetretat

P7210495Nothing better than a couple of 'pains au chocolat' and a baguette from a local bakery, still warm from the oven. Eating it 'en plain air' gives a real vacation feeling.

P7210496
Before visiting Etretat, we decided to go to the little village Saint-Valéry-en-Caux. It was a vivid town, with a nice atmosphere around the big marina and the city hall.

P7210500

Also there, in this 'Maison Henri V', the king spent the night once. It was weird to see the curved building style, but it is anyhow a house from the 16th century.

After some thinking and wondering, I figured out that we've never been to Fécamp.. so, no pictures about that.. Just a little information about the liquid 'Bénédictine'. It's made of 28 aromatic herbs that grow on the cliffs there. The Palais Bénédictine (on the picture) was the home of the liquors, but now it's a museum.

P7210513
"My gates are always open", that's what is said in the escutcheon of Etretat. They refer to the big chalk-cliffs that have grooves because of the sea.

On the first picture you see the 'Falaise d'Aval', with the 70 meters-high 'Aiguille' (the free-standing cliff).

P7210508
I still don't know what this is, but it was nice to see.. Anyone?

This was the only place were you actually could climb the big cliffs, what gave you a wonderful view. I know many others have captured it on picture, but it's nice, isn't it?

In the distance on the cliff (Falaise d'Amont), you see a little church and behind it, there's a 'needle' coming out of the landscape. It represents a monument for a French airplane that crashed in the neighbourhood.

P7210532
We discovered that from were we looked at the nice views, we were standing on a bunker from WWII.

P7210536
The town of Etretat was really nice and cosy. This is the 'Place Foch', with little hotels, crêperies, waffle-bakeries and a still used Normandic wooden market place.

Here you can see a painting of the famous artist 'Claude Monet', who painted the beautiful chalk-cliffs at Etretat.

Next: I'll post pictures about Rouen.

Trip to Normandy 2009: Travel-information

normandy-francenormandy_map_phys

In July I spent my vacation (a week) @ France, Normandy. At first, we went there because it has a history of war. But we discovered that Normandy is so much more than that. It has beautiful views, nature, delicious food, friendly people and the weather is.. unpredictable.

I'll explain more about that part of France with the help of our pictures. If some of you have never been to Normandy, I could only say; "go there, you must see at least once!"

Normandy (dark blue on the map of France), consists of two regions: Basse-Normandie, the lower part, comprising the departments of Calvados, Orne and Manche, and Haute-Normandie, the upper part, comprising Eure and Seine-Maritime.

We started at "Le Tréport", (go find it on the map, up up up near the coast!) and followed the coastline to finish at about "Isigny". Just to give you a random view of what I'll show you..

This is a random expression of what Normandy is and was to me:

One of the most legendary meetings took place last weekend. Bug Show @ the circuit of Spa, Francorchamps.

With the great weather on Saturday, the tours on the circuit, the non-stop rain on Sunday, the nice camping-spot and the unique atmosphere it was, together with Chimay, one of my favourite, most special meetings..

Check out part I:
